Biography

Bravo Murillo studied law at the University of Salamanca and Seville, and later worked as a lawyer. After the death of King Ferdinand VII, Bravo Murillo was appointed state attorney to the provincial court of Cadiz . After the transfer of power to the party of progressives, he was forced to resign in 1835 and again devote himself to advocacy. In May-August 1836, he served as secretary to the chairman of the government, Francisco Javier de Isturis .

The political career of Bravo Murillo began on September 22, 1837 with his election from the moderate party to parliament, where he represented the interests of Seville , Avila , Huelva and Albacete , but mainly Badajoz . In the early years, Bravo Murillo did not play a special role in the political life of the country due to the strong position of General Baldomero Espartero , regent under the young Queen Isabella II .

On January 28, 1847, Bravo Murillo was appointed Minister of Clemency and Justice in the office of Carlos Martinez de Irujo , and from that moment on, his political career went uphill. From November 10, 1847 to August 31, 1849, Bravo Murillo served as Minister of Commerce, Education and Public Works in the third government of Ramon Maria Narvaez . At this time, he also temporarily acted as minister of maritime transport, as well as minister of treasury. In the fourth cabinet of Narvaes, Bravo Murillo entered the rank of Minister of Treasury and performed his duties from October 20, 1849 to November 29, 1850, setting his task to balance the financial situation of the state.

On January 15, 1851, Bravo Murillo succeeded Narvaez as chairman of the Spanish government and served in this capacity until December 14, 1852, while acting as minister of treasury and interim minister of pardon and justice. Federico Roncali became his successor. In 1852, he was to give his place to General Lersundi , and in 1854, when a revolution broke out in Spain, he fled the country.

The coming to power of Baldomero Espartero and his party of progressives completely excluded Bravo Murillo from the political life of Spain. Nevertheless, in early 1858, Bravo Murillo served as chairman of the parliament for some time, and in 1863 he was elected lifetime senator of the General Cortes for his services to the country.

The name Bravo Murillo is one of the stations of the Madrid Metro . Juan Bravo Murillo is the author of specialized works on finance and economics. He also wrote the autobiographical book Opúsculos .
