Biography and Creativity
Katsukawa Shunko is one of the most famous students of the master Katsukawa Shunsyo . Like his teacher, Katsukawa Shunko specialized in the genre of theater engraving (yakusya-e). In the late 1780s, the artist suffered a stroke that led to paralysis of his right hand, since that time Katsukawa Syunko could use only his left hand.
Most often, Katsukawa Shunko portrayed Kabuki actors in the role of onnagata (female performers), surrounded by other actors and musicians. Katsukawa Shunko was successful in large chest portraits of Okubi-e, which he placed on fans and posters. He belongs to the introduction of a new type of image - ogao-e ( large faces ), in which the actor’s face filled the entire space of the composition. The persons portrayed by Katsukawa Shunko are distinguished by their psychologism and character.
Other subjects of Katsukawa Shunko's work include images of beauties and sumo wrestlers. The last topic was his teacher’s favorite, Katsukawa Shunsyo, and after him, Shunko also created many sumo-e prints.
