Biography
Ivan Zhmurko was born on August 16 (according to the new style - 29 ) on August 1914 in the village of Stepashki (now Gaisinsky district, Vinnitsa region of Ukraine ). After graduating from a rural school, he worked as an accountant. Member of the construction of DneproGES . In 1935, Zhmurko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1938 he graduated from the Kharkov Infantry School, in 1939 - from the Kharkov Military Aviation School of Navigators. He participated in the Soviet-Finnish war . Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. He took part in the battles on the Western , Kalinin , Stalingrad , Don , North Caucasus , 3rd Belorussian , 1st and 2nd Baltic fronts. He participated in the battles in the Byelorussian SSR in 1941 , its liberation in 1944 [1] .
By April 1945, Guard Captain Ivan Zhmurko was the navigator of the squadron of the 35th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 5th Guards Bomber Air Division of the 5th Guards Bomber Air Corps of the 15th Air Force of the Leningrad Front . By that time, he had made 206 sorties to bombard accumulations of military equipment and manpower of the enemy, his objects [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, Captain Ivan Zhmurko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Gold medal for "exemplary performance of command missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the guard. After the war, Zhmurko continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1949, he graduated from the Krasnodar Higher Navigation Officer School. On August 4, 1955, Major Zhmurko died tragically in the line of duty [1] .
