Biography

Born in Narva on April 7 ( 19 ), 1808 . Two years old, he lost his father, who was the first professor of philosophy at the newly opened Kazan University. Living in the family of his relative, Professor F. I. Erdman , Voigt graduated from the Kazan Gymnasium in 1823, and in 1826 - the Imperial Kazan University (according to the category of Oriental literature). In the same year he began to serve in the gymnasium, which brought him up - a teacher of the Persian language . Remaining at the gymnasium, in 1828 he was appointed an assistant librarian at the university and in this capacity he rendered a great service to the library by drawing up a special “Library Location Plan, with a historical note on the most important bibliographic systems proposed by scientists at different times” This plan was approved by the Academy of Sciences , and all the catalogs of the library were compiled from it. In 1833, Voigt was appointed lecturer of the German language and literature , and on the basis of his work entitled “A Historical Look at Satire of the Most Noble Ancient and New Nations” submitted the following year, he was awarded a master’s degree and was approved as an adjunct in the department of Russian literature, teaching him history general literature. Finally, having defended his thesis under the title “On the historical significance of epics among ancient and new peoples”, in 1838 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was appointed extraordinary , and in 1842 - Ordinary Professor of Kazan University. In 1845 he was elected to the vice-rectors. In addition, from 1841 he was a class inspector at the Rodionovsky Institute of Noble Maidens .

Despite these various activities, Voigt, gifted with rare diligence , found time for extensive and painstaking work. So, he published (1844) a detailed report on the 17-year administration of the Kazan school district Musin-Pushkin (Kazan, 1844. - 531 pp.) And compiled a complete, documentary catalog of the university münz cabinet, with the inclusion of an extensive department of oriental numismatics . In 1853, Voigt was transferred to Kharkov University as rector , in 1859 he was appointed fellow trustee of the Kharkov school district , in 1863 - trustee and finally, with transfer to St. Petersburg in 1867 - member of the Council of the Minister of Public Education and chair of the Academic Committee of this ministry . From January 1, 1864 - Privy Councilor; January 1, 1869, was awarded the Order of St. Anne , 1st degree.

Voigt marked his activity at Kharkov University with the publication of labor under the title: “Historical and statistical notes on the Imperial Kharkov University and its institutions, from the foundation of the university until 1859” (Kharkov, 1859. - 174 p.). This work was, according to the author, to serve as preparatory work for the future history of Kharkov University.

His student, Professor N. N. Bulich in the obituary noted:

From his family and from the society of some Kazan foreign professors, Voigt carried out an excellent knowledge of European languages ​​and familiarity with the works of general literature, which had always been his favorite subject, as well as that gentleness of character, his distinctive feature, which was expressed in his simple manner and in the grace of his manners.
