History
The city is located on the slope of Mount Stormberg , 359 km northwest of East London . The village arose in the area of Klipfontein ( African. Klipfontein , literally "source at the cliff"), which was acquired by Hert Boytendach on December 27, 1847 . The current name was given in honor of local citizens who defended the area during the Seventh Kaffir War ( 1846 - 1847 ), or, perhaps, as a sign that they created a village, without waiting for the church to be erected here.
In 1869 , the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church was founded, the rector of which was Professor Dirk Postma. He was the first preacher of the church, which opened on January 21, 1860 in a warehouse (at that time, most of the population was unhappy with the split in the church of the Cape Colony). In 1905, the theological seminary moved to Pochefstroom , where in 1951 it was transformed into the Pochefstroom University of Higher Christian Education .
In recognition of the important role that Burgersdorp played in the struggle to recognize the official status of the Dutch language in the Cape Colony, in 1893 a monument to the Dutch language was erected in the city. During the second Boer War in the vicinity of the city, strong battles were fought. The blockhouse built by the British has survived from those times. Local attractions include the prison and the restored theological seminary building.
Modernity
At present, Burgersdorp is the administrative and commercial center of the district, where livestock and wool production are common.
It is also an important railway junction between East London and Bloemfontein .
The city has a famous provincial hospital [2] .
Burgerdorp is widely known for its sports facilities, including Short Park, where tennis, bowling, cricket, dzhukskey ( af: jukskei ), a swimming pool, etc. are located. There is also a small amusement park. Denis Craven Stadium is one of the best rugby courts in South Africa with 6,000 seats. There is also a 9-hole golf course.
