Biography
Born on December 14, 1914 in the village of Prkosi near Bosanski Petrovac in a family of farmers. He graduated from high school in Kulen-Wakuf in 1927, until 1929 he was engaged in agriculture. He entered the School of junior officers, which he graduated in 1931. He served in the Yugoslav royal army . I met the April war in Slovenia as a commander of a machine-gun company platoon. After the surrender of the country, he returned to his village in order to avoid capture.
In the early days of the People’s Liberation War, Nikola was the commander of the Chovka detachment; in December 1941 he joined the Communist Party. Since September 1941, he served as deputy commander of the Bosansko-Petrovatsky battalion. In April 1942, he headed the 5th Krainsky partisan detachment, in August 1942 he became commander of the 3rd Krainsky proletarian shock brigade, and a year later he headed the 10th Krainsky division. In January 1944, Nicola took over as deputy commander of the 5th Bosnian Corps, leading him at the end of the year.
When he was the commander of the Bosansko-Petrovatsky battalion, in January 1942 in Medena Pole, along with his soldiers, Nicola defeated the Italian squad, having received a gunshot wound after a machine gun fire. Having quickly recovered, he returned to duty. As the commander of the 3rd brigade, he took part in the battles on the Neretva and on the Sutjesk . The team under his leadership received personal thanks from Josip Broz for helping the wounded in the battles on the Neretva. The combat path of the brigade passed through the towns of Pren, Drin, Ifsar, Sutjeska, Iliyash and many others.
In the postwar years, Karanovich held various high posts, rising to the rank of colonel general. He graduated from the Higher Military Academy. Until the end of his life he lived in Croatia. Died November 22, 1991 in Split . He was awarded a number of orders and medals, received the title of People's Hero on December 20, 1951 .
