Title
The scientific name of the genus was first used by Karl Linnaeus in 1741 . Linnaeus described a new species of Stewartia malacodendron based on a design by Friedrich Earhart from Isaac Lawson . In a letter to Linnaeus, Lawson requested that this plant be named after John Stuart , a Scottish nobleman who was fond of botany.
Botanical Description
Representatives of the genus are deciduous, rarely evergreen shrubs or trees , reaching 20 m in height.
Leaves on short winged petioles, lanceolate, ovoid or elliptical, with a serrated edge, leathery or membranous, pointed at the end.
Flowers up to 12 cm in diameter, axillary, solitary or in racemose inflorescences . Bracts are small, usually not falling. The calyx is divided into 5 sepals overlapping each other. Corolla white or light yellow, divided into 5 (sometimes 6-8) petals. Stamens are numerous, in an amount from 50 to 150, closer to the base fused to the stamen tube. Pestles in the number 1 or 5, with a single or 4-6 separate stigma. Ovary superior, five-membered, with 2-7 ovules in each nest.
The fruit is a brown conical or ovoid capsule , revealing five folds. Seeds , including 2β4, small, obovate, shiny, brown or reddish, sometimes winged.
The number of chromosomes is x = 15, 18.
Range
Species of the genus Stuartia under natural conditions are common in East Asia and eastern North America . Evergreen species are known only from Asia.
