Rocking chair - a lounge chair with a special opportunity to swing back and forth to the person sitting in it.
Swinging of the chair is provided by two curved parts attached to the legs of the chair, or by a special hinged or roller mechanism.
Most often rocking chairs are made of wood.
History
The exact time and place of the invention of the rocking chair is unknown. In the USA, its creation is sometimes attributed to Benjamin Franklin , but rocking chairs were common in North America at the beginning of the XVIII century [1] , and the first use of their English name, rocking-chair , dates back to 1766 [2] , while they were known in England even earlier.
The famous Austrian furniture maker Michael Thonet began the production of "Viennese" rocking chairs in 1860 [3] . It is believed that rocking chairs have a calming effect [4] .
