Biography
Johan Baptist Spanog was born in 1796 in the city of Madras .
In 1816 he became a member of the Dutch East India Company , in 1821 he was appointed assistant resident of the southern regions of the city of Bantam . In 1827, Spanog’s health began to deteriorate. In 1831 he went to Timor , where until 1834 he worked as a resident. In the next few years, he studied the flora of the Lesser Sunda Islands . In 1836 he returned to Java, a year later resigned and settled in Pekalongan .
On April 22, 1838, Johan Spanog died at the age of 41.
Spanog has published several articles on the flora of Timor. His most famous manuscript, Prodromus florae timorensis , was bought together with the herbarium D. F. L. von Schlechtendahl after the death of Spanog and published in the magazine Linnaea in 1841-1842. Herbarium of Spanoga was subsequently transferred by Schlechtendahl F.A.V. Mikel . It is currently kept at Leiden University (L).
