History

The United States established diplomatic relations with Nigeria in 1960, after gaining independence from Britain . Over the years of independence in Nigeria, a series of military coups, mass killings and civil war took place . In 1999, a democratically elected president came to power, after which the 16-year period of military rule ended. After this event, US-Nigerian relations improved significantly, cooperation in the foreign policy sphere and peacekeeping in the region expanded.

Nigeria's economic growth is largely driven by rising oil revenues. Although the country held successful elections in 2011, it faces enormous difficulties in strengthening the democratic order, namely: suppressing terrorist activities, inter-confessional conflicts and public distrust of the government. Nigeria has yet to develop effective measures to combat corruption, poverty, an inefficient social service system, and reducing domestic violence. In accordance with the resolution of the US-Nigerian bilateral commission, both countries will hold talks in four main areas: governance, transparency of state. organs and integrity; energy and investment; Niger Delta and regional security, as well as agriculture and food.

Trade

Nigeria is the United States' largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa , mainly due to the high level of oil exports from Nigeria. The United States is Nigeria 's largest foreign investor in the economy , with direct investment mainly in the oil and wholesale industries. The United States imports from Nigeria: butter, cocoa, rubber, food, oil. US exports to Nigeria: wheat, vehicles, plastic.
