History
The United States established diplomatic relations with Nigeria in 1960, after gaining independence from Britain . Over the years of independence in Nigeria, a series of military coups, mass killings and civil war took place . In 1999, a democratically elected president came to power, after which the 16-year period of military rule ended. After this event, US-Nigerian relations improved significantly, cooperation in the foreign policy sphere and peacekeeping in the region expanded.
