Biography
Alexander Zippelius was born in 1797 in the city of Würzburg . Soon he went to the Dutch East Indies , settled on the island of Java . Since 1823, Zippelius worked as an assistant curator in the Beitensorg Botanical Garden.
In 1827, Alexander Zippelius became a member of the Commission of Natural Sciences. In 1828, he went on a scientific expedition to New Guinea under the leadership of Heinrich Christian Macloth . Also members of this expedition were zoologist Salomon Mueller and illustrators Peter van Ort and Gerrit van Ralten. On October 14, a group of scientists arrived in Kupang . Zippelius managed to create many detailed descriptions of plants of local flora, but did not return to Java. On December 31, 1828, he died at the age of 31.
The bulk of Zippelius manuscripts has never been published. Salomon Müller subsequently used some of Alexander’s notes transmitted to him by Karl Ludwig von Blume in his books on zoology.
