Biography

Manfred Wolke was born on January 14, 1943 in the city of Potsdam (now the state of Brandenburg ). He began to actively engage in boxing in Babelsberg at the age of sixteen, in 1965 he moved to permanent residence in Frankfurt an der Oder , where he continued training in the Forverts sports club. He achieved his first serious success in 1967, when he won the GDR championship in the first middle weight and won silver at the European Championship in Rome. Thanks to a series of successful appearances, he was awarded the right to defend the honor of the republic at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City , where he subsequently defeated all his rivals, including such famous boxers as Vladimir Musalimov and Joseph Bessala in the semifinals and finals, respectively.

Having received a gold Olympic medal, Volke somewhat slowed down, but in 1970 he returned to the elite of German boxing, again becoming the first in the championship of the GDR. A year later, for the third time, he won the German Democratic Republic champion title and won silver at the European Championships in Madrid. In 1972, he participated in the standings of the Olympics in Munich , but in his third match, due to a cut over his eye, he lost by technical knockout to Cuban Emilio Correa , who eventually became the champion. Shortly after these competitions, the athlete decided to end his boxing career - there are 258 fights in his track record, 236 of them ended in victory. After leaving the ring, Manfred Wolke became a rather successful boxing trainer, in particular, he worked with such well-known professionals as Axel Schulz and Henry Maske [1] .
