Ulken

Ulkin ( kaz. Ylken - lit. “big”, “big”) is a village (until 2013 - an urban-type settlement [1] ) in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region of Kazakhstan . The administrative center and the only settlement of the Ulken rural district. The KATO code is 194275100 [2] .

History

The settlement was founded in 1984 in connection with the proposed construction of the South Kazakhstan State District Power Plant (SKPPP), which was never implemented. In 1986, the settlement was transferred from the Moyynkumsky district of the Dzhambul region to the Kurtinsky district of the Alma-Ata region with the appropriation of the name Ulken and the classification of workers' settlements [3] . In 1997, at the proposal of the President of the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan, Vladimir Shkolnik , it was decided to use the site for the construction of nuclear power plants [4] , but the protests of environmentalists and residents of the country [5] again forced to revise plans, and at the end of 2008 the government decided to build the Balkhash TPP [6 ] . Preparations for the construction of the BTES began in 2013, but was later suspended. In the first half of 2016, some materials were delivered to the construction site, a site for construction was also prepared, after which the activity stopped again [7] .

Population

In 1999, the population of the village was 3106 people (1538 men and 1568 women) [8] . According to the 2009 census , 1682 people lived in the village (813 men and 869 women) [8] .
