Composition and significance of the collection
Probably, initially “Florida” contained only whole speeches, since the handwritten tradition divides them into four books ( scrolls ), while the surviving text barely exceeds one book. At an unknown time, a fan of Apuleius selected 23 passages that are currently known. The selection was made purely stylistically, there is no semantic connection between the passages. Moreover, some of them begin or end in the middle of a phrase. Common to the entire text is the sophistication and refinement of the style, characteristic of the second sophistry and especially for Apuleius. In addition, “Florida is a mirror of the public and literary manners of that era, its ideas, moods and joys ” [1] .
