Biography
Ivan Zherebtsov was born in 1912 in the village of Bogorodskoye (now the Vadinsky district of the Penza region ). In February 1942 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army; since February 1943 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the North-Western , Central and 1st Ukrainian fronts. He participated in the Battle of Kursk , the Chernihiv-Pripyat operation , the battle for the Dnieper , the liberation of the Kiev region , the Zhytomyr-Berdychiv operation . By January 1944, the guard sergeant Ivan Zherebtsov commanded a branch of the 12th Guards Airborne Regiment of the 4th Guards Airborne Division of the 40th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the Korsun-Shevchenko operation [1] .
January 27, 1944 near the village of Balabanovka, Oratov district, Vinnitsa region of the Ukrainian SSR, at a critical moment of the battle, the Stallions with grenades threw themselves under a German tank, destroying it at the cost of their lives. He was buried in the village of Knyazhya Krinitsa [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944 for "courage and heroism shown in the Korsun-Shevchenkovsky operation", the guard sergeant Ivan Zherebtsov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner , the medal "For Courage" [1] .
