Until 2004, only a black and white copy of this film, entitled Vietnam on the Road to Victory ( Vietnamese Việt Nam trên đường thắng lợi ) was shown in northern and united Vietnam [1] .

From material filmed in Hanoi at the Victory Day parade on January 1, 1955, a separate Vietnamese documentary film, Historical Day (Ngày lịch sử) (1955) , was edited [2] .

The color version of the film Vietnam was first shown on Vietnamese television in 2004 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the victory at Dienbienf [1] [3] .

Filming

In May 1954, a group of cameramen from the USSR ( Vladimir Yeshurin , Evgeni Mukhin , led by Roman Carmen ) first arrived at the base of the Vietnamese national partisan forces and the DRV leadership, operating underground in the jungle in the North Vietnamese Vietbak region [4] . The group met with Ho Chi Minh and for eight months, together with the filmmakers of the DRV ( Pham Van Khoa , Mai Lok , Nguyen Tien Loi , Quang Hui , Hong Ngi , writer Nguyen Din Thi ), filmed material for the documentary. In total, about forty thousand meters of color film were shot [5] .

Due to the fact that the Vietnamese authorities feared for the safety of Soviet cameramen, many of the battle scenes in the film "Vietnam" were taken from materials previously shot by Vietnamese cameramen, and many battle scenes were staged in the form of reconstructions of real events. It is for this reason that the film credits indicate that it is an art-documentary [6] .

Meeting with captured Frenchmen, Roman Carmen talked several times with captured French front-line cameraman Pierre Schönderffer and watched his documentary footage of the battles confiscated by the Vietnamese authorities. What is the subsequent fate of these films is still unknown to the general public. After some time, Pierre Schönderffer was released and returned to his homeland in France, this was largely due to Roman Carmen. Later, already becoming a famous filmmaker, Pierre Schönderffer in his interviews recalled meetings in captivity with Roman Carmen and, among other things, indicated that many production scenes of fights were made by Roman Carmen based on shots from his documentary films [6 , Schönderffer [6 ] .
