Born in Graz. He joined the Jesuit Order in 1736 and in 1749 went to Paraguay, where for eighteen years he worked a lot among the Guarani Indians and then among the Abipons . Returning to Europe after the expulsion of the Jesuits from South America, he settled in Vienna, became a friend of Empress Maria Theresa , survived the fall of the power of his order and wrote the story of his missionary work.
This book, the full title of which is Historia de Abiponibus, equestri bellicosaque Paraquariae natione, locupletata copiosis barbarorum gentium, urbium, fluminum, ferarum, amphibiorum, insectorum, serpentium praecipuorum, piscium, avium, arborum, plantarum propriumibricum erie a living language for its time, was published in Vienna in 1784 in Latin; a German translation soon appeared, authored by Professor Krell from the University of Pest. In 1822, her anonymous translation into English came out in London, the real author of which was the poetess Sarah Coleridge , who thus wanted to pay the cost of studying at the college of one of her brothers.
