Biography
In 1442, after the death of his father, the duke of Breton of Jean VI the Wise, Pierre took possession of the county of Gingham .
In 1449-1450, along with his elder brother, Duke Francis I of Breton , Pierre participated in military operations against the British in Normandy .
In June 1450, after the death of his brother Francis I of Breton, who left no sons behind him, the 32-year-old Count de Gingham Pierre inherited the ducal throne of Brittany, as well as the titles of the Earls de Montfort and de Richmond.
Fragile, timid, prone to bouts of cruelty, Pierre II of Breton occupies a prominent place in Breton history. He removed from the ducal court supporters of rapprochement with France, but continues to support France in the Hundred Years War against England. He allowed the Bretons to fight on the side of the French. It was the Breton fleet, led by Jean Kelennekom , blocked the port city of Bordeaux in 1453 and landed troops from 8000 soldiers who occupied the city.
But at the same time, Pierre of Breton is trying to establish the independence of Brittany. He maintains direct relations with foreign rulers and signs treaties with Castile and Portugal in 1451. When the king of France, Charles VII of Valois , demanded a lent bonnet from Brittany, Pierre refused to do so.
On September 22, 1457, the 39-year-old duke of Breton, Pierre Simple, died in Nantes . He was succeeded by Uncle, the Count and Constable of France by Arthur de Rishmon (1457-1458).
