Edward Davidovich Collins , Edward Albert Collins , also Davidovich or Collins ( German: Edward Albert Christopher (Eduard Albert Christoph) Ludwig von Collins ; 3 (14) July 1791 - 4 (16) August 1840 ) - mathematician Russian Empire of the XIX century, ordinary academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Director Petrishule In the history of mathematics it is important that he attracted M. V. Ostrogradsky and V. Ya. Bunyakovsky to the Academy of Sciences. Contemporaries were known, first of all, as a teacher of mathematics of Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich, the future Alexander II .

Biography
Edward's father, John David Collins, a Scot, emigrated to Prussia. From there, he was invited to St. Petersburg to take the place of pastor at the Reformed church, and later became the director of the first school in St. Petersburg, St. Petra . Mother, born Anna Charlotte Wilhelmina Euler (1773–1871), was the daughter of conference secretary of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences I. A. Euler and granddaughter of mathematician Leonard Euler . In 1789, after marrying a young academician Jacob Bernoulli Jr. at the age of 15, two months later she became his widow.
At thirteen, Collins enrolled in the St. Petra . He early discovered a love of mathematics and at the age of 16 studied Euler algebra with Lagrange notes. Such interest and ability to mathematics drew on him the special attention of his uncle, academician N. I. Fuss , and he began classes with him in higher mathematics. Collins was doing very fast. In 1814, he was elected an associate of the Academy, in 1820 - an extraordinary academician, and in 1826 - an ordinary.
From 1824 he was a teacher at the School of St. Peter, and from 1833, after the death of his father, she was its director; being a court teacher of mathematics for 10 years, he taught mathematics to the Grand Duke Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich.
His works are mostly related to geometry (where he studied the individual curves) and number theory, as well as analysis (combinatorial analysis and its application to mathematical analysis). He tried to study the properties of mathematical operations and symbols from a very general point of view [2] . His main merit to mathematics was the attraction of M. Ostrogradsky and V. Ya. Bunyakovsky to the Academy of Sciences.
In the 1829-1838 editions of the Academy of Sciences, several of his memoirs are published.
According to RBS :
Collins did not pass the university, but his knowledge was extremely extensive and he owned a completely scientific method; he was also a great music lover and a great connoisseur.
Family
Collins' son, Eduard Eduardovich, was the inspector of Petrishule , and in 1913-1915 the building of Petrishule was rebuilt (for the last time) according to the design of the architect Vladimir Eduardovich Collins, the son of the inspector who served in the management of the houses of the German Church. [3]
Alexander Eduardovich Collins ( him. Alexander Waldemar Wilhelm Von Collins ; 1868-1945), the owner of several printing houses in St. Petersburg-Petrograd, is also known.
