History

Matching Mole included famous musicians from the leading Canterbury bands - Wyatt himself ( vocals , drums ), David Sinclair (from Caravan , keyboards ), Phil Miller ( guitar ) and Bill McKormick (from Quiet Sun , bass ).

It was expected that the group will allow Wyatt to show their outstanding vocal and composing abilities. But Wyatt wanted to make Matching Mole not a solo project, but a full-fledged group. As a result, a purely instrumental approach prevailed in music, and the voice played a secondary role. Matching Mole played magnificent long instrumental jams in the style of the Soft Machine of the early period.

The first Matching Mole album (1972) is made up of Wyatt's group jams and solo compositions, the most famous of which is β€œO Caroline”. On the second album Little Red Record (1972), produced by Robert Fripp , Sinclair was replaced by David McRae (from Nucleus ). This album consists of tracks written mainly by other members of the group (Miller, MkRay and McCormick), and Wyatt wrote only lyrics. The creativity of Matching Mole on both albums combined personal themes with civilian themes, becoming rare examples of propaganda music that could be touched by the soul.

At the end of 1972, Matching Mole broke up when Sinclair and Miller left for the emerging Hatfield and the North band.

The updated Matching Mole squad was about to record the third album, but this did not happen, as Wyatt accidentally fell out of the window of the third floor, after which he remained paralyzed from the waist down. However, already in 1974, Wyatt again began work, releasing a very successful solo album Rock Bottom , which recorded Nick Mason from Pink Floyd , Mike Oldfield and Henry Cow guitarist Fred Frith . Wyatt released his latest solo album in 2007.
