Dejan Yakovich ( Serb. Deјan Јakoviћ , English; Dejan Jaković ; born July 16, 1985 , Karlovac , SFRY ) is a Canadian football player of Serbian origin, defender of the Los Angeles American club and the Canadian national team .

Dejan was born into a family of ethnic Serbs in Yugoslavia . At the age of six, he emigrated with his parents to Canada , as the war for the independence of Croatia began in his homeland. The family settled in Etobico [1] .

Yakovich began to play for the team of the Higher Scarlet Academy of various ages. Also in the youth team of Canada, he twice won the Ontario Cup. At the age of 18, Dejan went to the OFK Belgrade, but did not sign a contract. After that, he entered the University of Alabama in Birmingham , where he played for the university team at the NCAA [2] .

On June 28, 2008, Yakovich signed a contract with the Serbian Red Star after a successful viewing [3] . Dejan played three matches under the leadership of Zdenek Zeman , but after the change of coach he lost his place in the first team. After six months, Yakovich began to look for other options for continuing his career. In December, it was announced that Dejan would move to Rad , but in February 2009 the deal fell through.

On February 27, 2009, Yakovich moved to DC United [4] . On March 22, in a match against the Los Angeles Galaxy , he made his MLS debut . [5] May 27, 2012 in a duel against the “ New England Revolution ” Yakovich scored his first goal [6] .

In early 2014, Dejan signed an agreement with the Japanese Shimizu S-Pals . On March 1, in his match against Nagoya Grampus , he made his debut in the J-League [7] . According to the results of the 2015 season, the team flew out of the elite, but Yakovich remained in the club and helped her return.

In early 2017, Dejan returned to the United States by signing a contract with New York Cosmos . On April 2, in a match against Miami , he made his debut at NASL [8] . On August 20, in a duel against Indy Ileven , Yakovich scored his first goal for New York Cosmos [9] .

At the end of January 2018, Yakovich returned to MLS, joining the Los Angeles League rookie club [10] . On March 4, he took off as a starter in the first round of the 2018 season against Seattle Sounders , the first official match in Los Angeles history.

International Career

In 2008, Yakovich participated in the qualifying matches for the Olympic Games in China . In 2009, he took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as part of the Canadian national team . At the tournament, he took part in matches against the national teams of El Salvador [11] , Jamaica [12] and Honduras [13] .

In 2011, Dejan also fell into an application for participation in the Golden Cup , but in preparation for the tournament in a duel against the Ecuador national team, he received a hamstring injury and was unable to go to the competition. In the national team, he was replaced by David Edgar .

In 2015, Yakovich was included in the application for the national team to participate in the CONCACAF Gold Cup . At the tournament, he played in matches against the national teams of Costa Rica [14] , Jamaica [15] and El Salvador [16] .

In 2017, Dejan took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the third time. In the tournament, he played in matches against the teams of French Guyana [17] , Costa Rica [18] and Jamaica [19] . In a duel against the Guyanese, Yakovich scored his first goal for the national team.
