About composition

“On the Turning Away” is one of the three tracks on the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason , in the writing of the text for which Anthony Moore, the musician of Slapp Happy [6] [7], took part. Anthony Moore was actively helped by Gilmore in creating the lyrics of the song “On the Turning Away” [8] .

For On the Turning Away, Richard Wright performed the solo part on keyboards, and Bob Ezrin and John Karin wrote the orchestra, but Gilmore decided that they did not fit this composition and did not include them in the final version of On the Turning Away [6 ] [9] .

The video for the song was shot at a concert in Atlanta in November 1987.

Concert Performance

“On the Turning Away” was performed at concerts of the world tour of 1987 - 1989 at the end of the first part of the performance, consisting mainly of the compositions of the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason [10] [11] , and at some concerts in 1994 [12] . The song was included in the concert compilation of Delicate Sound of Thunder [13] and in the video version of the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert directed by Wayne Isham [14] . The concert version of the composition differs from the album with a longer introduction on the organ and a longer guitar solo in the finale [15] . The song was not included in the 1994 Pulse live album and its video version P * U * L * S * E.

“On the Turning Away” was included in the 2008 David Gilmore live album in Gdańsk as a bonus track - the song was recorded on August 31 in Venice during the 2006 Gilmore concert tour [16] .
