History
For the first time license plates on cars of Tajikistan appeared at the time of Tajikistan's joining the USSR . From that time until 1996, the country used Soviet-style license plates belonging to the Tajik SSR .
In 1996, Tajikistan introduced license plates of its own design, made in the image and likeness of license plates of the Russian Federation .
In 2009-2010, in Tajikistan, license plates of a new type began to be issued, markedly different from the previous ones. At the same time, new types of rooms appeared, for example, for public transport and for vehicles of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In April 2014, the license plates slightly changed - the size of the letters became equal to the size of the numbers, and a chip appeared under the TJ code.
License plates of the standard 2010-2010
New license plates differ significantly from previously issued ones. The flag of the Republic of Tajikistan and the car code “TJ” appeared on the signs, the region code was no longer written in a separate window, license plate elements were swapped.
As the letters in the previous format, the letters of the Tajik Cyrillic alphabet are used , similar in spelling to the Latin ones, namely: A, B, E, K, M, H, O, P, C, T, X. Since 2014 the rooms also use the Latin letters D and Y.
Types of issued license plates
- License plates of individuals
Performed in black characters on a white background. On the left is the national flag of the Republic of Tajikistan, under which the car code “TJ” is written, followed by four digits, two smaller letters and two digits indicating the region of registration. A two-row license plate has also been developed, where four numbers are placed in the upper row, and the letters and region code in the lower row. Since 2014, the size of letters and numbers has been the same.

- Public Transport License Plates
Performed in black characters on an orange background. The format of the number coincides with the format of individuals, only the letter combination "TT" is used as letters. Since 2014, the size of letters and numbers has been the same.
- License plates of legal entities
Performed in black characters on a white background. From the format, the number of individuals differs by the presence of only three digits at the beginning of the number. Since 2014, the size of letters and numbers has been the same.
- License plates for car trailers
Performed in black characters on a white background; the sign is a double-row square. The national flag of the Republic of Tajikistan is placed in the top row, under which the TJ car code is written, followed by two digits of the region of registration and two letters; in the bottom row are four numbers. Since 2014, the type of number has changed: now in the upper row are four digits, and in the lower row are two letters and two digits of the region, the size of letters and numbers is the same.
- Motorcycle License Plates
Performed in black characters on a white background; the sign is a double-row square. The national flag of the Republic of Tajikistan is placed in the top row, under which the TJ car code is written, followed by three digits; in the bottom row are the letter and two digits of the region of registration.
- License plates of special equipment and trailers for it
The appearance of the mark has remained unchanged since 1996.
- License plates of cars of the armed forces of the Republic of Tatarstan

- License plates of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan
Performed by white characters on a blue background. The number of individuals differs from the format by the presence of only one letter (“M”).
- Transit License Plates
Reminiscent of modern Russian transit numbers, but mirrored. On the left, in a separate window, black on yellow in 2 rows is the information: the upper row is the code of the region of registration and the combination “ TJ ”, the bottom row is the word “ tranzit ”. In the rest, a letter, four digits and another letter are applied in black and white. Since 2014, the form of the sign has changed a little: the first letter has become the same size with numbers, and the flag of Tajikistan has been drawn above the last letter.
- License plates of cars of non-residents
Performed by white characters on a green background. The format of the mark remained the same as in 1996. The letter means:
B - a car of a foreign bank;
M - car of a foreign company or enterprise;
N - car of a foreign citizen.

- Country vehicle license plates
Performed in black characters on a white background. Initially, it contained three numbers, the letter TJ and the outline drawing of the Republic of Tajikistan. Soon, the state flag of Tajikistan began to be placed on the numbers in the upper right corner.

In 2010, it was decided to return to traditional rooms. In relation to the previous standard, the flag was moved from the right to the left, and the lettering "RT" was replaced by "TJ". There are numbers where the combination of "TJ" is placed both before the three digits, and after them.

The modern Russian number was taken as a sample of the first Tajik numbers with the only difference - instead of the “RUS” code and the Russian flag, the letter “RT” was written in small letters in the window of regional affiliation, the flag was missing.

Initially performed in the “four-letter letter” format, after all the numbers were exhausted, two letters began to be placed at the beginning of the number.

- Diplomatic License Plates
Performed by white characters on a red background, the format is the same as that of non-residents. The first three digits are the country code of the representative office; the letter means:
D - vehicle employee with diplomatic status;
S - an employee’s car without diplomatic status (technical staff);
CMD - the car of the head of the diplomatic mission. After the letters "CMD" in the numbers put only one digit.

- Country vehicle license plates
Performed in black characters on a white background. Format - three digits and the combination of letters "RT", instead of a window with a region code - a large flag of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The top military leadership had license plates of the same format, but made with white symbols on a black background.
