Biography
Fyodor Zhaldak was born in 1908 at the Aleksandro-Grigorovka farm (now the Pyatikhatsky district of the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine ). Received primary education. In 1924 he joined the combo , actively participated in collectivization . He worked as a groom on a collective farm . In 1941, was in occupation, sheltered Soviet citizens, including military personnel, from being stolen to Germany. After the liberation of the Zhaldak district in November 1943, he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since December of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Participated in the Korsun-Shevchenko operation , the liberation of Hungary , Poland , Czechoslovakia . In battles, he was twice wounded and shell-shocked three times. By October 1944, the Red Army soldier Fyodor Zhaldak was a machine gunner of the 795th Infantry Regiment of the 228th Infantry Division of the 53rd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . Distinguished himself during the liberation of Hungary [1] .
On October 9, 1944, Zhaldak secretly crossed the Tisza River near the city of Chongrad and took a convenient position to shell German troops crossing the river. The fire of Zhaldak took the enemy by surprise and sowed panic in his ranks, which allowed to capture the ferry and eight boats. While the Soviet troops crossed, Zhaldak covered it with his fire. Later, he took part in repelling the enemy counterattack, destroying enemy soldiers and officers near a platoon [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945 for "courage, bravery and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders", Red Army soldier Fedor Zhaldak was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He did not manage to receive the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal , as he died in battle on April 6, 1945. He was buried 6 kilometers west of the Slovak city of Piestany [1] .
