Carbon County is one of the counties of Montana , USA . The administrative center is the city of Red Lodge.

Content
History
The district was created on March 4, 1895 by separating part of the territory from Park and Yellowstone counties [1] . It got its name thanks to the rich coal deposits available here. The first Montana state oil well was installed on the territory of Carbon County, in the Elk Basin field, in 1915 [2] .
Geography
Located in southern Montana, on the border with the state of Wyoming. The area of the district is 5340.6 km², of which 5304.3 km² - land and 36.3 km² - inland waters. The eastern part of the district is occupied by the mountain range Prior, through which the Bighorn River flows.
Carbon County is home to parts of the Custer and Gallatin National Forests.
Economics
The basis of the economy of the district is agriculture and tourism. Earlier, the coal industry also played an important role [3] .
Population
The population of the district according to 2010 is 10 078 people [4] . According to the last census of 2000, it numbered 9552 people. According to data for 2000, the ethnic composition was as follows: whites - 97.7%; Native Americans - 0.68%; Asians 0.36% and African Americans 0.25%. Most of the population is of German, English, Irish and Norwegian descent. The proportion of persons under the age of 18 years is 24.00%; over 65 years old - 16.80%. The average age of the population is 42 years.
