History
Members of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition passed through the territory of the modern district. In 1864, gold was found in the Big Belt mountains, attracting prospectors to the area. In 1881, the Northern Pacific Railway was built through Townsend [1] .
Geography
Located in the western part of the state. The area of the district is 3209 km², of which 3084.7 km² is land and 124.3 km² is inland waters. The eastern and northern borders of Broadwater run roughly along the Big Belt mountain range, the western along the Elkhorn range, and the southern along the Horseshoe hills. On the territory of the district there is a reservoir Canyon Ferry, which is the third largest reservoir of Montana. Lake water is actively used for irrigation of nearby fields, and also attracts tourists here.
The Helena National Forest is located in the county.
Population
According to the 2010 census, the county population is 5,612 people [2] . According to the last 2000 census, it numbered 4,385 people. For the year 2000, the racial composition was as follows: whites — 97.04%; Native Americans - 1.16%; African Americans - 0.27% and Asians - 0.11%. Most of the population is of German, English, Irish and Norwegian origin. 98.0% of the population consider English as their first language and 1.3% German .
The proportion of persons under the age of 18 is 25.20%; persons older than 65 - 16.40%. The average age of the population is 41 years. For every 100 females, there are an average of 104 males.
