De Simone, Carlo

Carlo De Simone , Ital. Carlo De Simone (November 22, 1932, Rome) - Italian linguist- etruscologist , specialist in comparative linguistics. Most of his scientific career took place in Germany and Austria. In 2009, he published a new monument of the Lemnos language - an inscription from Efestia [1] .

Biography

After graduating from a school in Rome in 1950 , Carlo De Simone studied comparative linguistics and classical archeology at the University of Rome , which he graduated with honors in 1955 , defending a dissertation on Messap inscriptions [2] . He received a grant to continue his studies at the University of Tübingen in 1955 - 1956 , studied under the guidance of H. Krae , whose assistant worked later, in 1961 - 1964 .

In November 1964 , he received a doctorate degree at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Tübingen, defending a dissertation on Greek borrowings in the Etruscan language .

In 1972 - 1973 led the Department of Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at the University of Vienna ; in 1975 - 1980 was a professor of linguistics at the University of Perugia .

Finally, in 1980 he was appointed professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Tübingen and held this position until his retirement in 1998 .

In the field of linguistics, De Simone was mainly interested in the Etruscan language and other languages ​​of ancient Italy. He published a large number of studies in the journal Studi Etruschi . He made a great contribution to the study of the etymology of the name of the city of Rome and the name of its founder Romulus , which, in his opinion, came from the Etruscan word * ruma , denoting the female breast.
