Range
It lives in tropical rainforests in the lowlands of southern Benin , south-west of Nigeria and, presumably, Togo [3] .
View Description
There is a white beard and whiskers on the head. In males, the fur on the chest and belly is reddish brown (in some males, gray). Females are distinguished by the gray color of the fur on the lower side of the body, arms and legs. Body length up to 45 cm, tail - up to 60 cm [4] . Males weigh between 3.5-4.5 kg and females weigh 2-4 kg. They are kept on trees in groups of 3-4 individuals, but sometimes flocks of up to 30 animals are found. Females give birth to one cub, which is one of the factors in reducing the population. They feed mainly on fruits, as well as insects, leaves and shoots of plants.
Conservation Status
Due to the narrow range, the species is rare and is listed in the IUCN Red List as being in a vulnerable position . The main threat to its existence is human activity, primarily - the destruction of forests for timber and agricultural land, as well as poaching due to the beautiful fur [5] .
Subspecies
- Cercopithecus erythrogaster erythrogaster - Benin, Nigeria, Togo
- Cercopithecus erythrotis pococki is the southwestern part of Nigeria [5] .
