Bogdan, Yoan

Yoan Bogdan (July 25, 1864, Brasov - June 11, 1919, Bucharest ) is a Romanian Slavic philologist, author of studies on Slavic influence in the Romanian language, founder of Slavic-Romanian philology.

He graduated from high school in Brasov, then went to college in Iasi . Having received a bachelor's degree, he studied Slavic languages ​​in Vienna , St. Petersburg and Krakow . June 20, 1892 became a professor in the philological faculty of the University of Bucharest, from 1898 to 1912 being his dean and becoming in 1897 the first head of the department of Slavic philology in Romania. March 31, 1892 became a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, and March 29, 1903 was elected an academician. Twice, from May 25, 1910 to May 25, 1913, and then from May 28, 1916 to June 1, 1919, he was elected vice president of the Academy. He was also a member of the Moscow Society of History and Antiquities.

For the most part, his scientific works were devoted to the analysis of the vocabulary of medieval Slavic-Romanian manuscripts, while Bogdan emphasized the important role of Slavic languages ​​in the formation of the Romanian language. He was also the author of a number of summarizing works on the history and culture of the Romanian people in the Middle Ages.
