Burg (Moon Crater)

Crater Burg ( lat. Bürg ), not to be confused with the crater of Burgi ( lat. Byrgius ), - an impact crater located in Death Lake in the north-eastern part of the visible side of the Moon . The name was given in honor of the Austrian astronomer Johann Tobias Bürg (1766-1835) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater dates back to the Copernican period [1] .

Crater Description

The vicinity of the crater Burg. Shot of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter probe.

The closest neighbors of the crater are Plana Crater in the south and Mason Crater in the southeast. To the west of the crater are the Burg furrows [2] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 41 km [3] , depth 3.07 km [4] .

The crater shaft has a polygonal bowl-shaped shape, moderately destroyed. The inner slope has a terrace-like structure. The height of the shaft above the surrounding area is 1020 m [5] , the volume of the crater is approximately 1100 km³ [5] . In the crater bowl is a massive central peak with an elevation of 820 m [5] .

Crater Burg is included in the list of craters with a bright ray system of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Astronomy (ALPO) [6] and in the list of craters with dark radial bands on the inner slope of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Astronomy (ALPO) [7] .
