Olavo Bilak ( port. Olavo Bilac ; December 16, 1865 , Rio de Janeiro - December 28, 1918 , Rio de Janeiro ) - Brazilian poet Parnassian , journalist and translator. In 1907 he was named by the magazine Fon-Fon "the prince of Brazilian poets". Known as the author of the text of the anthem Brazilian flag. He was one of the founders and the 15th member of the Brazilian Academy of Literature from 1897 until his death in 1918. He was also considered the “patron” of military service in Brazil thanks to the campaign he organized in favor of conscription and statements in favor of compulsory military service [5] .

Born in Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 15, he became a student at the Federal University, where he began to study medicine, but did not complete the course. Later he entered the law faculty of the University of São Paulo, but did not graduate, being passionate about journalism and literary work. As a result, he managed to enter the civil service and become a school inspector. His first sonnet was published in the Gazeta de Notícias newspaper in 1884. In 1891, he was arrested for four months as a result of his participation in protests against the regime of the president Florian Peixoto . Also known for losing control of his car and crashing into a tree in 1897, he became the first person in Brazil to have a car accident.
In addition to poetry, he was the author of satirical works, short stories, chronicles, children's poetry, and several textbooks. Never been married and had no children. In 1917, without a higher education, he became an honorary professor at the University of São Paulo. He was buried in the cemetery of John the Baptist in Rio de Jainero.
