Betty, Emilio

Emilio Betty ( Italian: Emilio Betti ; August 20, 1890 , Camerino - August 11, 1968 , Camerino ) - Italian philosopher, lawyer, theologian, researcher of Roman law . He is best known for his contribution to hermeneutics , in particular, to the theory of interpretation, although his works have rarely been translated into other languages. The older brother of the Italian playwright Hugo Betty .

At 21, he graduated from the Law Faculty of the University of Parma , at 23, he graduated from the Faculty of Humanities in the same place. Then he taught for a year in high school, after which he received the right to lecture at the University of Parma. In 1917 he became a professor at the University of Camerino. In 1918-1960, he taught law at various universities in Italy (in Macerata, Messina, Rome, Parma, Florence, Milan), and also taught courses at major universities in Europe as a visiting professor. In 1960, he formally resigned, in 1965 he became an honorary professor and in the last years of his life taught law at the Pontifical Lateran University .

Since 1919 he was known for his support of Italian fascism. During the reign of Mussolini was considered an authoritative lawyer and in 1942 was one of the main authors of the Civil Code of Italy. In 1944 he was arrested by the new authorities in Camerino and spent about a month in prison. In August 1945 he was put on trial and suspended from teaching, but was acquitted during the trial. During his life he has written more than 300 works on jurisprudence, Roman law and hermeneutics .
