He studied for a bachelor's degree during the Civil War in Spain. After the war, he was an inspector in the Franco police and was a member of the socio-political brigade. He then entered the University of La Laguna in the Canary Islands, studying art history and completing his education at the Central University of Madrid with honors in 1948. In the same year, he became an assistant professor at the University of Madrid and until 1958 served as an associate professor of Spanish history, in 1956 he received his doctorate, defending a dissertation on the political life of Toledo in the 15th century, which was later published as a separate book.

Over the years, he received various scholarships and grants from Spanish and foreign institutions, which allowed him to expand his studies, which he conducted at various universities in Spain and France. In 1964, Benito Ruano headed the Department of Spanish History at the University of Oviedo, moving to Asturias, where he remained until 1981. During this period of his life, he became one of the founders of the magazine Asturiensia Medievalia and actively participated in various international congresses and seminars. In 1981, he became a professor of medieval history in Spain at the National University of Distance Education, as a result of which he returned to Madrid. After his retirement, he retained the title of professor emeritus.

In 1988, he became an academician at the Royal Academy of History (being a corresponding member since 1972), in 1997 - at the Royal Academy of Physicians, in 1997 - at the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
