Biography
Grigory Efimenko was born on November 20, 1919 in the village of Sazda (now - Akbulaksky district of the Orenburg region ). In 1939 he graduated from the school of agricultural mechanization, after which he worked as a combine harvester on a collective farm . In January 1942, Efimenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since March of the same year - on the fronts of World War II. In 1943 he graduated from junior lieutenant courses. By July 1944, Junior Lieutenant Grigory Efimenko commanded a platoon of machine gunners of the 244th Infantry Regiment of the 41st Infantry Division of the 69th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the forcing of the Western Bug [1] .
July 21, 1944 Efimenko, at the head of a group of 17 fighters, crossed the Western Bug and knocked the enemy out of trenches on the outskirts of the village of Dubenko in Poland . The German forces launched several counterattacks, but all of them were repelled. Efimenko’s group destroyed more than 100 enemy soldiers and officers, holding the bridgehead until the main forces arrived [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown", Junior Lieutenant Grigory Efimenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Medal Star ” under number 5776 [1] .
After the war, Efimenko continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1950, he graduated from the Shot courses. In March 1961, with the rank of Major, Efimenko was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in the city of Shchelkovo, Moscow Region . He died on December 29, 1984 [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
