History
The settlement was formed in 1887 under the name of Access Road No. 54 as a railway construction site. In 1890, it received a name in honor of the Mediterranean island-state of Malta : the official representative of the Great Northern Railway James Hill spun the globe and chose a name at random. In the same year, the first post office was opened in the city. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the famous bandit Harvey Logan was operating in the area of the city in particular, on July 3, 1901, he robbed a train that had barely departed from Molta - forty thousand dollars became its prey, a huge sum for those times. Since 1913, the city has been the administrative center of Phillips County; as of 2011, about 45% of the county’s population lives in Molta.
There are four schools in Molta [5] .
