About the album

Hanoi Rocks began recording the second studio album, codenamed Second Attempt for Suicide , in late 1981. The process was led by producer Pete Wooliscroft, who worked with Frank Zappa . The release of Oriental Beat was a turning point for the team. The album was seen by journalists of the British edition of Kerrang! and the disc was released in the UK and Japan , while the band's first record was released only in Finland’s homeland Hanoi Rocks, as well as in neighboring Sweden [1] . The band's British debut was not without scandal: the back cover of the Oriental Beat , depicting a red-blue-colored female chest topped with the inscription “Hanoi Roxx”, was sharply criticized by New Musical Express [1] . It is worth noting that this image was originally planned as a front cover, but the label's management was worried that fans of Hanoi Rocks might remember the erroneous name Hanoi Roxx, and the picture was moved to the back.

Team leader Michael Monroe considered Oriental Beat an “excellent” record, but accused Pete Wooliscroft of poor-quality production and mixing, which caused the sound of the Oriental Beat to suffer [2] . Sami Jaffa bassist, by contrast, called the album "a piece of shit." Despite the conflicting opinions of the band members themselves, Oriental Beat is considered the unconditional classic of Hanoi Rocks [3] . The album took the 91st place in the list of “100 best rock albums of all time” according to the Finnish radio station [4] . The 1984 Hanoi Rocks record, Two Steps From the Move , ranked 53rd [4] .
