Herman II (Landgrave of Thuringia)

Herman II ( German: Hermann II .; March 28, 1222 , Kreuzburg - January 3, 1241 , Kreuzburg ) - Landgrave of Thuringia from 1227 from the Luding dynasty. He also bore the titles of Margrave Meissen and Count of Hesse-Godensberg.

Biography

Herman II was the son of Landgrave Ludwig IV and Elizabeth of Hungary , daughter of King Andras II .

He was 5 years old when his father died of the plague in the Sixth Crusade . The regent of the young landgrave was his uncle Heinrich Raspe . He expelled Elizabeth of Hungary from the country, and after her death in 1231 declared himself co-ruler of his nephew.

In 1239, Herman II married Helen, daughter of the Duke of Braunschweig-Luneburg Otto I Child .

Herman died in 1241 at the age of 19. It is believed that he was poisoned. He had no children. His widow Elena Braunschweig (1223–1273) in 1247/1248 remarried to Albrecht I, Duke of Saxe-Wittenberg .
