Biography and Creativity
Toyohara Chikanobu is one of the last artists of the Ukiyo-e period. Hashimoto Naoyoshi (real name) served as a vassal of the Sakakibara clan , who owned the principality of Takada in the province of Etigo . After the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Toyohara Chikanobu joined the Shogitai army and fought at the battle of Ueno . He then joined the supporters of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Hakodate , where he participated in the Battle of Hakodate defending Goryokaku Fort under the leadership of Enomoto Takeaki and Otori Keisuke . After the surrender of Shogitai, he was detained in the principality of Takada.
In 1875, Hashimoto Tadayoshi decided to take up painting and studied at the Kano school in Edo , then carried away with woodcuts and entered the Toyohara Kunitiki workshop. According to Japanese custom, he took the surname of the teacher and a pseudonym starting with the last character of his name. The scenes of Toyohara Chikanobu's paintings, unlike the theatrical themes of his teacher, were scenes from the past and modern life of Japan, Japanese mythology, women and children, the events of the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-1895 .
Toyohara Chikanobu also performed prints with portraits of the imperial family and her entourage, as well as on the previously forbidden topic of customs and behavior of women living in the Mikado palace. In addition, he portrayed new trends in the Meiji era : aristocrats dressed in European fashion, Japanese travel abroad, a concert of a European orchestra and others. Among his series stand out “Images of noble women in the Tokugawa era”, “Morals and Customs of Edo”, “Snow, the Moon and Flowers”.
