Biography

In 1986, Ross graduated from the St. Alban School in Washington and in 1990 became a graduate of Harvard University , where he was a student of composer Peter Liberson and worked as a presenter at the college radio station WHRB, in charge of classical music and underground rock. He received a bachelor of arts degree with the highest honors for his thesis on James Joyce .

From 1992 to 1996, Ross worked as a music critic at The New York Times . He also published in The New Republic , Slate , London Review of Books , Lingua Franca , Fanfare and Feed . He first wrote for The New Yorker in 1993 and became a regular contributor in 1996.

In 2007, Farrar, Straus and Giroux published his first book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century (“Farther Noise. Listening to the 20th Century”), dedicated to the history of musical culture since 1900. In the US, she collected accolades, entering the top ten books of 2007 according to the New York Times , received the National Circle of Book Critics and the Pulitzer Prize and the Samuel Johnson Prize. [1] Three years later, Ross’s second book, Listen to This (“Listen”), was published in the same publishing house.

Ross was awarded the MacArthur Scholarship [2] , was awarded the Dims Taylor Prize three times from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for publications on music, and also received the Holzbrink Prize from the American Academy in Berlin.

In 2005, Alex Ross and director Jonathan Lisecki were married in Canada [3] .
