The 1970 USSR Athletics Championship was held from September 12 to 14 in Minsk at the Dynamo Republican Stadium. The capital of Belarus took the national championship for the second time in history (for the first time - in 1951 ). Over the course of three days, 37 sets of medals were won.

The championship was personal in nature, the team championship was not played.
At the competitions, not a single record of the USSR was broken. The core pusher Eduard Gushchin was closest to success, who, with the best attempt at 20.18 meters, lost only 10 centimeters to his own all-Union achievement. At that time, Gushchin remained the only Soviet pusher with career results for 20 meters.
The three-time winners of the Minsk championship were Boris Savchuk and Tatyana Kondrasheva from Leningrad. Savchuk excelled at distances of 200 and 400 meters, as well as in the relay race 4 Γ 400 meters. One of the best all-rounds of the country Kondrasheva acted in separate disciplines: she managed to win 200 meters, 100 meters with hurdles and 4 Γ 100 meters relay race.
1969 European champion in the 100-meter race Valery Borzov made a failure, finishing twice in second place. At the 100-meter he was ahead of Alexander Kornelyuk , and at a distance twice as long - Boris Savchuk.
Evgeny Arzhanov , who earlier in July 1970 set a new USSR record in 800 meters (1.45.5), confirmed his high readiness at the national championship. He was ahead of silver medalist Ivan Ivanov by more than a half seconds.
Another country record holder, Janis Lusis, has become an eight-time national javelin champion. For the holder of the All-Union achievement in the pole vault Gennady Bliznetsov victory in 1970 became the sixth.
Olympic champion Viktor Saneev was out of competition in the triple jump sector - 16.86 m. The nearest pursuer lost more than half a meter to the athlete from Sukhumi.
For the fourth time in a row, Nadezhda Chizhova won the shot put and became the first to overcome the 19-meter mark at the USSR championships.
The first victory in discus throwing was won by Faina Melnik , ahead of the country's record holder Tamara Danilova .
During 1970, USSR championships were held in various cities in various athletics disciplines:
- April 4 - USSR Cross-country Championship ( Kislovodsk )
- September 12β13 - USSR Championships in marathon and walking ( Fryazino )
