Biography
Born in 1926 in the village of Chonki on the outskirts of Gomel in a peasant family, received primary education.
In November 1943, after the liberation of Gomel, he was drafted into the Red Army. Since December 1943, he participated in battles on the 3rd Ukrainian Front and 1st Belorussian Front.
On April 16, 1945 he was the commander of the rifle division in the 301st rifle division. The division during the Berlin operation that day was advancing on the left flank of the 5th shock army in the first echelon. The 1050th rifle regiment advanced on the Verbig railway station 5 kilometers north of Zelov (now within the city).
He acted as part of the assault group of the 3rd battalion of the regiment. At the approaches to the station, the unit was stopped by bunker fire and lay down. The detachment commander Zaitsev on his own initiative with a bunch of grenades crawled to the bunker. On the way was discovered by the enemy, who concentrated fire on Zaitsev, and the sergeant was wounded. Nevertheless, he continued to move towards the bunker, and when several meters remained to the firing point, he rushed at it and covered the embrasure with his body.
He was buried in Kyustrin , in a mass grave near the stadium. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 31, 1945, for the exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown to Sergeant Zaitsev Ivan Stepanovich, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union [2] .
Streets in Gomel and Chёnki are named after I. S. Zaitsev, on the building of vocational school No. 56 of Gomel, which housed the vocational school, where I. S. Zaitsev studied in 1940, a memorial plaque was installed [3] .
