History

The cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden, which together form the historic canton of Unterwalden , in 1803, after the liquidation of the Helvetic Republic , received significant independence in accordance with the Act of Mediation , including the right to mint coins. Nidwalden issued his coins in 1811, Obwalden in 1812. Both cantons on the obverse of the coins indicated the name "Canton of Unterwalden" and the name of their canton. On a coin in 1 batzen of Nidwalden, the face value was also indicated in rappens, on a similar coin of Obvalden, only in batzen [1] .

Coins of the cantons did not play a significant role in money circulation, where foreign coins were mainly used [2] .

The Swiss Constitution, adopted in 1848, established the exclusive right of the federal government to mint coins. On May 7, 1850, a federal law on the minting of coins was adopted; in the same year, minting of Swiss coins was begun [3] .

Banks of the cantons did not issue banknotes in 1803-1878. After the introduction of the Swiss franc , in 1879-1910, banknotes were issued:

  • in Nidwalden: Spar-und Leihkasse des Kantons Unterwalden nid dem Wald - created and started issuing banknotes in 1879, renamed Kantonale Spar-und Leihkasse von Nidwalden in 1891, issued banknotes with a new name in the same year. Banknote production ceased in 1910;
  • in Obwalden: Obwaldener Kantonalbank, created and started issuing banknotes in 1887, stopped issuing them in 1910 [4] .
