Biography
Born on November 9, 1803 in the city of Offenbach, Germany. His father, François Joanne (c. 1760–1838), owned a silk factory in Germany, where the family fled after the abolition of the Nantes Edict .
The pupil of his older brother and at the beginning of his career is his collaborator on the writing and engraving of illustrations for W. Scott , Cooper and Byron . Later, Tony began to prefer woodcuts. Distinguished by his rare industriousness and resourcefulness, he engraved 10 illustrations for Goethe 's Wörther and a number of pictures for Fables in an aqua-comfort way , but he became famous throughout Europe for his numerous drawings for the political figures for Don Quixote by Cervantes and the works of S. Nodier , Stern , Moliere and other authors. He was also engaged in historical and genre painting, although with less success than his brother and teacher; nevertheless, some of his paintings are noteworthy, for example, The Death of Dyugesklen ( 1834 ), The Battle of Rosebeck ( 1839 ) and Louis VII makes his way through the Meander Passage ( 1842 ).
He was an artist who was involved in the development of lithography in France. His work was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1831.
He died on August 4, 1852 in Paris.
