Don Cesar de Bazan (performance)

“Don Cesar de Bazan” - a performance staged by Vladimir Kozhich in the Leningrad Drama Theater [1] . In 1957, a television version of the play was created by director Joseph Shapiro at the Lenfilm film studio . The premiere on Soviet television took place on August 31, 1957 , and from September 2 of the same year, the television version was also shown in the cinemas of the country.

Performance History

The play “Don Cesar de Bazan” based on the play of the same name by the French playwrights Philippe Dumouinard and Adolph d'Enneri (translated from French by E. Askinazi and V. Golod) was staged by Vladimir Kozhich in 1948 and has enjoyed constant audience success over the years [1] . In the early 1950s, when it became possible to record theatrical performances using movie recorders [2] , the USSR developed a program to create a fund of films shot and intended for the general public to demonstrate the best Soviet performances on television and sometimes in movie theaters theaters [3] . Within the framework of this program, in 1957, a television version of the already famous play was created.

Story

The comedy takes place in Spain in the 17th century . The young charming dancer Maritana - the favorite of the poor of Madrid , earns a living by singing and dancing in the streets and dreams of a better share. Once the girl was seen by the King of Spain, Charles II, and wanted to make him his mistress. In love with the Queen, Minister Don Jose spins a cunning intrigue, planning to take advantage of this. However, the minister’s plans are ruined by the strong and faithful love of Maritan and the brave and noble don César de Bazan - a poor Spanish grandee, defender of the poor and oppressed.
