Isle la motte

In 1666 , on the island of Isle-la-Motte, the French erected a fort named after St. Anne . Fort St. Anne was one of the elements of the defensive line erected to protect against attacks by the Iroquois .

The city is located in the northwestern part of Vermont, on the territory of the island of the same name, which is located in the middle of Lake Champlain , at a distance of approximately 87 kilometers northwest of Montpelier , the state's administrative center. The absolute height is 31 meters above sea ​​level ^[1] .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city’s territory is 43.1 km², of which 20.6 km² is land and 22.5 km² (i.e. 52.2%) on the water surface.

According to the 2000 census ^[2] , 488 people, 143 families lived in Isle-la-Mott, there were 202 households and 415 housing units. The average population density was about 20.1 people per square kilometer.
According to the census, the racial makeup of the city was as follows: 97.75% White , 1.23% Native American , 0.2% Asian , 0.82% mixed race.
Of 202 households, 27.7% raised children under the age of 18 years, 59.4% were married couples living together, in 8.4% of families women lived without husbands, 29.2% did not have a family. 22.8% of the total number of families at the time of the census lived independently, while 7.9% were single elderly people aged 65 years and older. The average household size was 2.42 people and the average family size was 2.85 people.
According to the 2000 census, the city population according to the age range was distributed as follows: 25% - residents under 18 years of age, 4.3% - between 18 and 24 years old, 26.2% - from 25 to 44 years old, 27.3% - from 45 to 64 years old and 17.2% - aged 65 years and older. The average age of residents was 42 years. For every 100 females, 93.7 are males, while for every hundred females 18 years of age and older, there are 92.6 males also over 18 years of age.
The median income per household in the city was $ 36,125 , and the median income per family was $ 41,094. At the same time, men had an average income of $ 28,542 a year, compared to $ 24,000 of the average annual income for women. The per capita income for the city was $ 20,286 a year. 7.7% of the total number of families in the city and 9.4% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census, with 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those aged 65 and older.

There is a quarry on the island where black limestone is mined. In the thickness of sediments, fossil remains of a coral reef were discovered, which are the most ancient of the currently known ^[3] .
