Publication history
After the closure of Vremya magazine, the Dostoevsky brothers tried to continue publishing. By January 1864, M. M. Dostoevsky received permission to publish a new journal under a different name [1] . Officially, F. M. Dostoevsky could not appear either as an editor or as a publisher because of the authorities' ban on publishing. The first two issues for January and February 1864 were published simultaneously - in March. They published the first chapters of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky “ Notes from the Underground ”. Contrary to the expectations of F. M. Dostoevsky, “Epoch” did not achieve such great success with subscribers who used “Time”. The death of Maria Dmitrievna's wife, the death of Brother Michael, the passing away of the most valuable employee of the journal Apollo Grigoriev, financial and organizational difficulties were the reasons for closing the magazine. The last issue of the Epoch was released in February 1865.
Editorial and editorial policies
The editorial circle of the journal included Michael and Fyodor Dostoevsky, Apollo Grigoriev and Nikolai Strakhov . After the death of M. M. Dostoevsky in the summer of 1864, with No. 6, the publisher-editor of the Epoch included the family of M. M. Dostoevsky [2] , and A. U. Poretsky [3] [1] was appointed the official editor of the journal. "Epoch" continued the direction of "Time" and was the organ of the primitives . The journal led a fierce controversy with the magazines " Russian word " and " Contemporary " N. A. Nekrasov .
Dostoevist David Magarshack ( David Magarshack ) noted that Dostoevsky in the magazines "Time" and "Epoch" never doubted to challenge the radicals, that is, the so-called nihilists , and especially literary critics, rallied around the magazine "Contemporary" [4 ] .
Official criticism of the Soviet times regarded the journal as reactionary [2] .
Employees and publications
In total, "Notes from the Underground" occupied the first four issues of the journal. The story of F. M. Dostoevsky Crocodile was published in the last issue of the magazine of February 1865. N. V. Zhivolupova wrote that for a long time contemporaries and critics believed that “Crocodile” was “an evil parody of the fate and teachings of N. G. Chernyshevsky ” [5] .
Along with the works of Dostoevsky, The Epoch published articles by Apollo Grigoriev, Nikolai Strakhov, works by famous writers: Ivan Turgenev's novel Ghosts , an essay by Nikolai Leskov, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District , fiction by Vsevolod Krestovsky , Alexei Razin and a number of other authors.
