Biography
He studied at the Royal College of Music , at the Royal College of Cambridge (he graduated from the organ class in 1967 ). He later studied conducting with Franco Ferrara at the Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome ( 1967 - 1968 ).
In 1966 - 1970 - pianist, harpsichord player and organist of the early music orchestra of St. Martin's Academy in the fields . From 1970 - second conductor at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra , from 1975 - 1988 - music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . In 1989 - 2000 - music director of the Glyndeborn Opera Festival , as well as the main conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra . In 1995 - 1998 - the chief conductor of the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (together with Paavo Järvi ). Since 2000 - Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Chicago Lyric Opera .
