Biography

Born in the family of a military doctor. From the age of 13 he wrote poems in Hebrew . Collaborated in Jewish periodicals (“Idisher Arbeter”, “Der Veg”, “Literary Monetryshftn”, “Der Freind”, etc.). He published several collections of poems in Yiddish in Vilna and Warsaw . In 1912 he was arrested for revolutionary activities in the ranks of the Bund , after a six-month imprisonment in the Vilna prison, he forcedly left Russia.
He lived in France , then in Switzerland . He continued to collaborate in the Jewish press. Since 1917 - co-editor (together with P. L. Gershem) of the Geneva Bund weekly Di Frye Stieme. In 1920 he moved to Berlin , worked as a correspondent for the New York Forverts, printed poems, articles, chapters from a novel about Russian-Jewish emigration to Europe. He worked on the translation of the Bible into Yiddish. In the period from 1927 to 1940, he lived in Paris , edited the Bund’s daily newspaper, Unzer Stieme.
Collaborated in the editorial board of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, at the Jewish National University in Paris , in 1935, he lectured here. In 1940 he left for the USA . He worked as a permanent employee of the newspaper "Forverts".
