The personal-team championship of the USSR in athletics in 1966 was held from August 12 to August 14 in Dnepropetrovsk at the Meteor stadium. This Ukrainian city hosted the national championship for the second time in history (for the first time in 1946 ). For three days, 32 sets of medals were played (20 for men and 12 for women).

The only USSR record in the competition was set by Tatyana Schelkanova , who jumped 6.73 m in length during the pentathlon. In another attempt she showed a result of 6.96 m, but it was not ratified because the wind speed exceeded the permissible 2 m / with. Despite the outstanding result, Schelkanova ranked second in the sum of five types. She managed to win the champion title in a separate form, but her attempts there were slightly worse than in the pentathlon (the best was 6.70 m).
Two gold medals in the championship were won by the Press sisters. After Tamara 's victories in shot put and disc throwing, 16 gold medals of the national championships (won since 1958) were counted, and Irina , taking into account the success in running 80 meters with barriers and pentathlon, was 13 (from 1959). Tatyana Schelkanova and the Press sisters ended their sports career shortly after the tournament ended; They did not go to the European Championships in Budapest (August 30 - September 4, 1966).
For the tenth year in a row, Anatoly Mikhailov was the strongest in the 110 meters hurdles. For all this time, he was more than ever close to defeat: silver medalist Viktor Balikhin showed the same time at the finish with the champion (14.0).
The victorious double was issued by runner Viktor Kudinsky , who won the distance of 5000 meters and 3000 meters with obstacles. In the steeple-chese, he missed just over a second before setting a national record.
Two victories won Vera Popkova in the sprint at 100 and 200 meters.
Igor Ter-Ovanesyan for the eighth time (and the fifth in a row) was the strongest in the country in the long jump. Taking into account the performances in the races on his account was 11 victories in the championships of the Soviet Union.
The best results in the history of the competition were shown by Romuald Klim in hammer throw (69.84 m) and Janis Lūsis in javelin throw (85.08 m).
During 1966, various USSR championships were also held in various disciplines of athletics in various cities:
- March 13 - USSR Championship in cross-country ( Essentuki )
- July 3 - USSR marathon and walking 50 km championships ( Odessa )
- October 3—6 - USSR Championships in Decathlon and Relay Race ( Leninakan )
