1836-1919: Österreichischer Lloyd

In 1833, seven insurance companies in the city of Trieste decided, together with Lloyd's of London , to create Austrian Lloyd Trieste. After the preliminary procedures for the creation of the company, the administration asked the Emperor of Austria Ferdinand I to grant the company the privilege of navigating to the Levant (Promised Country).

On April 20, 1836, the company's navigation department was created, which on August 2, 1836, decided to build six steamboats. Thus was founded the company Österreichischer Lloyd (Austrian Lloyd).

In 1838, the company's fleet was 10 vessels, in 1846, 20 vessels, and in 1860, 61 vessels. [one]

In 1844, the company absorbed the company First Danubian Steam Navigation Company, having intercepted its line from Constantinople to Smyrna . A year later, the company became the postal carrier of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

1919–2006: Lloyd Triestino

In 1919, when the city of Trieste became part of Italy, the name of the company was changed to Lloyd Triestino.

As a result of World War I, the company underwent changes: 33 ships were confiscated by Austria for military needs (used as transport ships and hospitals), 8 were confiscated in foreign ports, 11 were sunk. [one]

By 1930, Lloyd Triestino again became one of the leading shipping companies, with a fleet of 85 vessels and 17 service lines to Asia, Africa and Australia. A network of agencies around the world consisted of 125 offices. [one]

During the Second World War, the company lost 68 ships. By the end of the war, the company's fleet consisted of 5 ships.

The fate of some of the company's ships:

  • Liner Wandilla , built in 1912. Purchased by the company in 1935, renamed to Cesarea, and in 1938 renamed to Arno. Initialized in 1940, the Italian Navy was used as a hospital ship. It was sunk by the Royal Air Force of England on September 10, 1942 at the coordinates of 33 ° 14′N 23 ° 23′E 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Tobruk.
  • Liner Duilio , built in 1921. The company was taken to the charter in 1933 and purchased in 1936. In 1942, it was taken to charter by the International Red Cross. Sunk July 10, 1944 allied aircraft. In 1948, raised and scrapped.

  • Leonardo da Vinci liner, built in 1925. Acquired by the company in 1937. On February 14, 1941, it was taken by the English cruiser HMS Shropshire (73) , renamed SS Empire Clyde and used as a hospital ship. In 1948, it was renamed RFA Maine and was used by the Royal Navy as an auxiliary vessel. Participated in the war in Korea. Scrapped in April 1954.
  • Savoia refrigerated truck built in 1922, acquired by the company in 1937. February 14, 1941 was taken as a trophy as a ship-prize by the English cruiser HMS Hawkins (D86) . Renamed to Empire Arun. Participated in a number of convoys. After the war, he changed several owners and in 1969 was sold for scrap.

1945–2006: post-war recovery

By 1956, the Lloyd Triestino fleet had grown to 31 ships.

In the 1970s, during the container revolution, the company became a pioneer in container shipping to Africa, Asia and Australia. The company owned the first Italian container ship “Lloydiana” with a cargo capacity of 1.698 teu. [one]

In 1993, the campaign entered into a partnership with the Taiwanese company Evergreen Marine .

2006: Italia Marittima

On March 1, 2006, the company changed its name to Italia Marittima.

The names of the ships were changed accordingly: instead of the prefix “LT”, the prefix “Ital” is indicated before the name of the ship (for example, LT Cortesia was renamed Ital Contessa).

  • 1963—1984: Galileo Galilei liner, built on the order of the company in 1963, for the Italy-Australia line. In 1979 he was sold to the company Italian Line .
